Enclosed vs. Open Trailer: Which to Buy Used
The most common trailer question. It comes down to what you haul, whether it needs to stay dry and secure, and how much you want to spend and tow.
| Enclosed | Open/Utility | |
|---|---|---|
| Weather & security | Protected, lockable | Exposed to weather and theft |
| Used price | Higher — more materials | Cheaper, simpler |
| Tow weight / MPG | Heavier, more wind drag | Lighter, easier to tow |
| Versatility | Cargo, moving, mobile shop | Landscaping, hauling, dump runs |
| Maintenance | Roof seams, ramp door | Deck boards, lights |
Choose Enclosed if…
you haul valuables, tools, or anything that must stay dry and locked.
Choose Open/Utility if…
you haul dirt, mowers, or bulky loads and want the cheapest, lightest option.
